Customer Molded Orthotics Q & A

What are custom-molded orthotics?

Custom-molded orthotics or custom orthotics are special shoe inserts designed to support the unique curvature of your feet. You can’t buy custom-molded orthotics at a grocery or shoe store. Dr. Latifi prescribes them to treat certain foot, ankle, and lower leg problems. They may also help ease back pain.

If you regularly experience musculoskeletal pain or need to improve your gait, custom orthotics are worth considering. Don’t continue to suffer in silence. Make an appointment at Eastside Podiatry Associates today.

What do custom-molded orthotics do?

At Eastside Podiatry Associates, Dr. Latifi uses custom-molded orthotics as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. She regularly prescribes custom-molded orthotics to address a variety of issues, including:

  • Foot deformities
  • Bunions
  • Flat feet
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Arthritis
  • Weak ankles
  • Foot pain
  • Ankle pain
  • Lower leg pain

Custom-molded orthotics can also reduce your risk of future injuries. They can improve your posture and make walking and standing more comfortable. If you have diabetes, you might also need custom orthotics since they can prevent your shoes from rubbing up against or causing ulcers or slow-healing wounds.

Am I a good candidate for custom orthotics?

To determine if you’re a good candidate for custom orthotics, Dr. Latifi performs a physical exam, review of your medical history, and discusses your goals for treatment. Dr. Latifi can make recommendations that align with your individual needs.

If you’ve tried various over-the-counter treatments such as anti-inflammatory medications or heel inserts, and your symptoms haven’t improved, you’re probably a good candidate.

What is the process for getting custom-molded orthotics?

Dr. Latifi takes a custom cast of your foot. A digital scanner captures a series of three-dimensional images of your feet, displaying their unique contour and shape.

Dr. Latifi sends this information to a podiatry laboratory that manufactures your custom-molded orthotics. Once finished, you return to Eastside Podiatry Associates to try them on.

Are there different types of custom orthotics?

There are two types of custom orthotics: rigid orthotics and accommodative orthotics.

Rigid orthotics

Rigid orthotics are thin and incredibly durable. They’re usually carbon fiber or plastic and can fit comfortably inside your shoes.

Accommodative orthotics

Accommodative orthotics are made of a soft, cushion-like material. They’re much larger than rigid orthotics and relieve pressure on painful or injured areas at the bottom of your foot.
